July 1 - The big day!

Today was the big day - D day (Delivery day).  We got to the hospital on time and everything was pretty easy getting checked in.  We went to the pre-surgery/recovery room and I got all hooked up to the IV.  That took about an hour in there.  Ricky and Teresa got to the hospital before 7am!  We were all making jokes and guess what - I started having contractions when we got to the hospital.

The surgery started a little later than scheduled because they had trouble getting the spinal block to take.  Turns out they were using needles that were too short.  Once they got the spinal block right, it was really quick!  Brian came in and the surgery started.  At least I think it did because I didn't feel a thing!  Just a tug here and there.  Baby was out in about 5 minutes after we started the surgery.

They brought the baby over to us and we met our son, Daniel Robert, for the first time.  He was beautiful with a full head of hair and everything!  He seemed like a Hollywood baby - he was clean and just perfect!  The nurse was even nice enough to take a family photo of us right after he was born.

Brian went with the baby off to the recovery room and they did Danny's measurements while they finished with me in the operating room.  They ended up taking out one of my fibroids because it was annoying the doctor.  Something funny that happened in the operating room was that once Danny was born and his cord had been cut, the fetal monitor was removed from him.  This caused a low pitched booooooooooooooooooooop (as opposed to the high pitched ones for adults) that seemed to go on for over a minute.  I just asked if I was dead.  I heard quite a few laughs from the other side of the curtain and the nurse later said that was one of the funniest things she ever heard in the operating room.  I wasn't dead, btw.

I had to stay in the delivery room until I could move my feet.  It was a really weird sensation to be telling your brain to move your foot and it not listening.  It took about 2 hours before I was able to move my feet again and they took me to my regular room.

Ricky and Teresa were waiting there.  They stayed until about noon time.  My brother Jason arrived from Tampa around 11 and stayed until about 5:30.  Brian's parents got there about 4 and stayed until about 7.  Karen got there after work and stayed until about 8.  We had a busy day of visitors but not too overwhelming.

We got a bit of a break that first night.  The night nurse was able to take Danny to the nursery from about 1:30am until 6:30am.  We got some good sleep but I was really hot and it was a real problem getting out of the bed to go to the bathroom around 5am.  I really stiffened up being in the bed and it was harder getting out of bed then than it was the first time I got out of bed (and that wasn't easy).

It was a really busy day but overall, not too bad.  The surgery went well.  The baby was healthy.  Our family got to meet the baby.  Recovery was under way.
